How to check a security licence in Tasmania

Tasmania issues licences to the business (a security agent) and to the people it employs (security employees), with the activities each person may do added to their licence.

Business licences

Security agent licence

Needed to run a business providing security or investigation services, such as:

  • crowd controllers: screening entry, monitoring behaviour and removing people from premises
  • security guards: patrolling, protecting, watching and guarding property, screening people leaving it, acting as a bodyguard and related training
  • commercial employees (debt collection and repossession)
  • inquiry agents

Individual licences

Security employee licence

Needed to work for a security agent, with each activity (crowd controller, security guarding general, commercial employee, inquiry agent) added to the licence. Guard dogs, firearms, batons and handcuffs need extra endorsements.

CCTV, alarm and lock work

The Tasmanian licence descriptions we used cover guarding, crowd control, debt collection and inquiry work. They don’t list installing alarms, CCTV or locks, so ask an installer what licences and trade registrations they hold for the work, and check with CBOS if you’re unsure.
