What drives the price
Number of cameras and coverage
Each extra camera adds equipment cost plus a cable run and mounting time. A good installer will start from what you actually need to see (the driveway, entry doors, side passages, the back yard) rather than a fixed camera count. Four well-placed cameras usually cover a typical single-storey home.
Wired (PoE) versus wireless
Power over Ethernet (PoE) cameras run power and data down a single network cable to a network video recorder (NVR). They are more reliable and do not need batteries or Wi-Fi, but installation takes longer. Cabling through a lowset slab home with a tiled roof is usually straightforward; highset timber homes, split levels and two-storey brick homes can add hours. Wireless and battery cameras are cheaper to install but depend on your Wi-Fi signal and need recharging.
Camera and recorder quality
Resolution matters less than people expect. A 4MP to 8MP camera with a good sensor and proper night vision will usually outperform a cheap 4K camera. Features that genuinely add value include:

Licensing, cabling and privacy
Before you accept a quote, check that the business holds the security licence required in your state and look it up on the regulator’s public register. Hardwired 240V work must be done by a licensed electrician, and data cabling inside walls should be done by an ACMA-registered cabler.
Point cameras at your own property. In Queensland, recording private conversations you are not part of can breach the Invasion of Privacy Act 1971 (Qld), so consider disabling audio recording on cameras facing shared or public areas.
