Townsville is the largest city in northern Australia, with the Flinders Street and Strand precincts, Castle Hill, a major port, James Cook University, Townsville University Hospital and one of the country's largest army bases. The Queensland Police Service recorded 6,224 offences against the person and property in the Townsville police division, which covers the city centre and inner suburbs, in 2025-26, down from 6,752 the year before. Assault (1,479) was the largest group, and there were 660 unlawful entries into homes, 659 property damage offences and 446 cases of car theft. The city's other divisions, Mundingburra and Kirwan, recorded 5,813 and 5,688.
