A business-hours call-out typically costs $80 to $150 before any work is done, and an after-hours lockout commonly runs $150 to $350. Planned jobs, like rekeying after you move in or upgrading to deadlocks, are far cheaper per lock when you book them together in one visit.

Rekey or replace?
Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing lock so old keys stop working. It is the cheapest way to secure a home after you buy it, after a tenant moves out, or after keys go missing, as long as the locks themselves are in good condition. Replace the lock instead when it is worn, when you want to upgrade to a deadlock, or when the door and frame need strengthening anyway.
A locksmith can usually key all your external locks alike, so one key opens every door. It adds little to the cost when done at the same visit.
Getting the security basics right
For older homes, better locks are often the most effective security spend available. Points to raise with your locksmith:
- Deadlocks on every external door, including laundry and garage access doors
- Strike plates and frames. A strong lock in a weak timber frame can still be kicked in, and a reinforced strike plate is inexpensive
- Window locks on ground-floor and easily reached windows
- Sliding doors, which often need an auxiliary lock or security bar
- Fire safety. Deadlocks should not stop anyone getting out in an emergency, so ask about locks that open from inside without a key
Avoiding emergency overcharging
When you are locked out, it is tempting to call the first number you find. Ask for the call-out fee and the likely total before the locksmith sets off. Be wary of quotes that jump once they arrive. Licensing rules for locksmiths differ between states, so also ask about trade qualifications, such as a Certificate III in Locksmithing, and membership of the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia.
